Twister was invented in the 1960s and first produced by Milton Bradley in 1966. The game was initially called “Pretzel,” but Milton Bradley changed the name before production. Twister is played using a plastic mat with four rows of colored circles printed on it. Players must put their hands and feet on the correct circles (determined by a spinner) and avoid falling over or letting their elbows or knees touch the mat. The game became popular after actress Eva Gabor played it with Johnny Carson on “The Tonight Show,” but also stirred controversy as Milton Bradley competitors accused the company of selling “sex in a box,” presumably because Twister was the first game to use human bodies as playing pieces. Hasbro acquired Milton Bradley in 1984 and currently produces the game.
