Biographies and Interviews

Hi Steve! Thank you for taking time for our inteview despite your crazy travel schedule now. Please share with our readers your roles and responsibilities in our industry?

I believe I have a responsibility to value play, and honor learning in the process. I believe that lives can be transformed, and personalities can be sculpted through experience. My role in this industry is to contribute meaningful content, and to advocate and champion for children, and their unique perspectives and approach to learning.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The ability to be able to create anything we want. The office collaboration, the osmosis and idea exchange - being able to stand up and yell “OMG What if you waive your hand and the dinosaur starts chasing you!” and watching a team of developers and creative minds bring it to life is a fantasy.

Do you have a mantra that you live by?

Don’t just play and learn, feel and experience.

What was your favorite project to date?

Our VR Atlas was by far the biggest undertaking of my professional career. When the words “we should do an Atlas” came out of my mouth, I wasn’t expecting it to be 3 years and 400 thousand dollars later, but we did something that’s never been done before, by taking on not just countries and continents, but cultural nuances, currency and cuisine, layered with projects and activities like learning how to make a pizza with a chef in Italy in VR, or discovering Japanese origami. It’s truly a remarkable item and I’m proud to have been a part of the ride.

How do you define innovation?

Innovation is defined by the lack of boundaries, having the freedom to fail and take any risk. Only through failure and falling on your back can we even remotely have a shot at building something great.

Where do you come up with your best ideas?

This is gonna’ sound crazy but 99% are in the shower. I actually now have a white board mounted in the shower to not only write ideas, but often scripting marketing messaging, or voice overs that I envision being on an ad or video.

What words describe how you think or how your brain works?

I would describe my brain as sort of a nuclear reactor that was left unfinished and abandoned by it’s designer.

Favorite movie of all time?

A movie that I feel sculpted a bit of my personality during an impressionable age had to have been Glengarry Glen Ross.

Everything would have been different if…

I had just stayed in medical school like my mom had asked.

Thank you for taking time to answer our questions thoughtfully and with a sense of play!
