My Little Pony

by : Hasbro

In 1981, Hasbro debuted My Pretty Pony, a 10-inch plastic pony figurine with movement functions. Despite releasing a few other similar pony toys under this brand, it was not successful. The following year, Hasbro launched the My Little Pony toy line, which included six smaller versions of the toy with the signature “cutie mark,” a decorative design on one or both flanks of the pony. The line was developed by Bonnie Zacherle, Charles Muenchinger, and Steve D'Aguanno, and was accompanied by a selection of animated specials and films during the mid-’80s. Ponies released in the U.S. from 1982-1992 are considered a part of “Generation One.” The line was redesigned and relaunched in 1997, but the redesigned ponies were not popular in the U.S. and the line was discontinued in 1999. These ponies are considered to be “Generation Two” by collectors. The line was relaunched again in 2003 with the ponies more closely resembling their 1980s counterparts; this wave of ponies continued until 2009 and is considered Generation Three. Ponies from 2010 through 2021 are considered Generation Four. The Equestria Girls fashion doll line is included in Generation Four. The start of the Generation Five toy line was announced in February 2021, which will be accompanied by a CGI film, animated special, and TV show.
