The Spirograph toy was first introduced to the market in 1965, but similar drawing devices for drawing mathematical curves had been manufactured and sold since the 1820s. The 1965 version was developed by British engineer Denys Fisher and initially produced by his company, with Kenner acquiring distribution rights and producing it for the U.S. market in 1966. The basic components of the toy are two plastic circles of different sizes with gear teeth on the inside and outside. One piece is held in place, while the other is rotated around with a pen, which fits in a small hole in the gear. Using different pieces together produces different patterns. The Spirograph toy was rereleased in 2013 by Kahootz Toys. PlayMonster acquired Kahootz Toys in 2019 and is the current producer of the Spirograph line.
