Combining the Classic play of the Magic 8-Ball fortune teller as a "Free Inside" toy premium in Cap'n Crunch cereal was a big winner!
The key to this idea moving forward was putting all the players together. I was at the Quaker Oats Co (conveniently in Chicago at the time) and had a meeting with all the brand managers to pitch and suggest Promotion / Premium ideas. While showing a Fortune Telling concept, the "light bulb" went off in my brain and I thought aloud, "Perhaps we could do this as a version of the Magic 8-Ball, would you like that?" They LOVED it! At the time I had a good relationship with marketing at Tyco Toys, current owner of the 8-Ball and other brands, and aksed if we could work this out. Things were going well with Neotoy and Tyco Toys due to the success of our Doctor Dreadful line of toys at Tyco. The deal essentially was that Tyco gets the Magic 8-Ball on 20 million kid-marketed cereal boxes and coupons printed on the side panels. Quaker Oats' Cap'n Crunch brand gets a no-royalty, Magic 8-Ball exclusive and a unique premium packed in the box of cereal. A TV Commercial was even in the plans. A rare "Win-Win" deal for everyone! Neotoy did the manufacturing of the plastic parts, die cut paper die and "8" image and it was a big success! This was also a project all manufactured in the USA at the time.
